LITTLE ROCK, AR — The Arkansas Women in Agriculture (ARWIA) group bestowed its highest service award, the Spirit of Arkansas Women in Agriculture Award, to Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) on Monday.

"The Arkansas Rice Federation commends ARWIA for recognizing the ground-breaking career of Senator Lincoln and her continued efforts to support rural Arkansas and U.S. agriculture," said Jackson County rice farmer Jennifer James, who serves on the Arkansas Rice Producers' Group board of directors. "As a woman involved in farming, I appreciate Senator Lincoln for her leadership on agricultural issues that are vital to the economic strength of our state and our nation."

ARWIA CEO Carrie Hirmer said during the award presentation that Lincoln also "has been a strong advocate for fighting hunger and food insecurity." Lincoln founded and currently chairs the bipartisan Senate Hunger Caucus "to help focus the attention of her colleagues and the nation on the millions of American families, especially children, who suffer from food insecurity," Hirmer added.
