2009 Rice Leadership Development Class Completes First Session

Members of the 2009 Rice Leadership Development Program class tour a mid-stream loading facility on the Mississippi River in New Orleans. The group visited with executives at Rice Belt Warehouse, toured the instant rice plant at Riviana Foods and the Anheuser Busch facility. The trip also included a visit to the Alvin, TX, headquarters of RiceTec, where the class learned about the latest hybrid rice technology. While in Texas, they also met with staff of the U.S. Rice Producers Association.
In Louisiana, class members visited Farmers Rice Milling Company in Lake Charles and toured its Agrilectric Power plant, which burns rice hulls for power. Other
activities included a tour of the Louisiana State University Rice Research Station, Louisiana Bag Company, Russell Marine Group and GeneScan. The session ended with a tour of a midstream loading facility on the Mississippi River, south of New Orleans, where ships and barges are loaded with rice for international transport.

John Deere, Syngenta and RiceTec sponsor the program through a grant to The Rice Foundation, and the USA Rice Federation administers it.
